According to available customs data, in the second quarter of this year, Chinas timber import volume reached 18.83 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 1.09%, while the import value amounted to 27.5 billion yuan, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 8.96%.

Although overall timber imports show an upward trend compared to the previous quarter, they still experienced a slight decrease compared to the same period last year. The import volume in the second quarter increased by 3.03 million cubic meters compared to the first quarter.

In June alone, China imported 3.84 million cubic meters of logs, representing a year-on-year decrease of 11.6%, with a value of 4.5 billion yuan, a year-on-year decline of 26.6%.

Domestic demand for logs is still recovering. However, driven by rising raw material costs, tightening inventories, and market sentiment favoring "buying in a rising market," timber prices in some regions of the country achieved "ten consecutive increases" as of July 21. Notably, the Shandong region recorded the highest increase, reaching 230 yuan per cubic meter.

On the other hand, typhoons and high temperatures are also impacting production activities in the construction industry and furniture factories. Therefore, timber merchants are advised to stay vigilant about market dynamics to avoid missing business opportunities.
